When does the season run?

The travel season typically begins in early November and runs through the first or second week of March. Exact dates may vary slightly depending on the team and coach.

When are the games?

All teams participate in the Pittsburgh Youth Basketball League (PYBL), which runs from early December through February. Games are usually scheduled as double-headers on Saturdays or Sundays. Some travel is required, as most games are played outside of Pine-Richland School District.

Are there tryouts and cuts?

Our philosophy is to create opportunities for every player who wants to participate in travel basketball. However, some years may require cuts due to high registration. In some cases, we may recommend players continue in our In-House program to build skills. The PYBL is a competitive league, and we want every player to have an enjoyable experience at the right level.

Do teams play in tournaments?

Yes. This depends on the coach, but teams may participate in 2–5 tournaments throughout the season. All PRYB travel teams will participate in our home tournament over Christmas Break (dates will be communicated to families).

When are practices held?

Practices begin the first week of November once teams are announced. Each team’s schedule will be finalized by the coach. The goal is to provide two gym sessions per week focused on practices and skill development.

What about uniforms and practice jerseys?

All travel teams will wear the same uniform design. Beginning in 2025, every player will also receive a practice jersey.

What is the cost per player?

Costs vary depending on uniform needs. Returning players who still fit into last year’s uniform will pay a base fee (TBD). New players and incoming 3rd graders must purchase a complete uniform set. Additional uniform pieces will be available if needed. Practice jerseys are included for all players. A payment plan will be offered.

When will teams be announced?

Teams will be announced on Wednesday, October 8th at 8:00 PM. That evening, families will also receive a player contract and registration link. Travel basketball is a significant commitment for players and families.

Does my child have to attend Pine-Richland schools to play?

No. Your child does not need to attend PRSD, but they must live within the Pine-Richland community. Home-schooled, Catholic, and private school students are welcome.

Parent Expectations & Commitment

Attendance & Commitment

Players are expected to attend all practices and games unless excused in advance. Consistent attendance is critical for team development, playing time, and fairness to teammates.

Sportsmanship

Parents are role models—please demonstrate positive support for all players, coaches, and referees. Negative behavior such as arguing with officials, coaching from the stands, or poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated.

Communication

Questions or concerns should be directed to the head coach, not discussed during or immediately after games. The PRYB Travel Coordinator is available to help resolve issues respectfully.

Volunteering

Each travel family is asked to assist during the season, such as helping at our home tournament over Christmas Break, scorekeeping, timekeeping, or supporting fundraising events.

Financial Responsibility

Families are responsible for timely payment of all fees. If financial assistance is needed, please contact PRYB leadership in advance to discuss available options.
